Current PRI Projects

FIELD RESEARCH SUMMER 1993-97

PRI field research teams have been working in the Pre-Uralian Foredeep from the Aqtöbe (Aktyubinsk) region of Kazakhstan-Russia northward to Perm. The work has focused on completing a transect of the Aqtöbe sub-basin. These shelf facies will be compared with the basinal units of the Ural sub-basin, which comprises the exposed portion of the Pre-Uralian Foredeep north of the Ural River. A preliminary effort will be made to better delineate the stratigraphic controls on the structure of this fold-thrust belt.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Present work at Boise State, Brigham Young University, VSEGEI (St. Petersburg), and the Paleontologic Institute (Moscow) includes: documentation of the sequence stratigraphy of the Aidaralash Creek section (Gzhelian-Baigendzhinian), assessment of the stratigraphic controls on regional structure, regional paleogeographic reconstructions, development of a graphic correlation composite section, and compilation of conodont, fusulinid and ammonoid biostratigraphy for the Southern Pre-Ural Foredeep. Reports on this work will be provided in future issues of "PRI - Notes
